LoL Ultimate Guide to Increase Your FPS

I saw this LoL fps increasing guide on reddit and shared it with you guys here. Hope it will help you play LoL smoothly.

Please note that even if you do all of the things below, there is no guarantee that your FPS will increase and if you mess up you might end up damaging your system (however, this is only if you REALLY MESS UP ) you might want to create a backup CD, just in Case!

Low end Machines

Low end machines are kind of tricky, don't expect to run 60fps on Hardware that can't do that!

  • Step One

First thing you want to do completely is minimize the programs in the background, close anything, your browser, steam, skype and whatever else you might have open. This will help especially on single/dual core CPUs and machines with low amounts of RAM.

  • Step two

This is a follow up to Step one, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC this will take you directly to the Task Manager , if you didn't know about this guy feel free to thank me later. If you didn't use the Task Manager before you will be in the Tab "Applications" this one is pretty much useless to us, since all the programs listed there are known by you. Switch to the "Processes" tab.

If you are on Vista/Win7/Win8(not sure about Win8) you should press "Show processes from all users" in the bottom left corner. Now you will have a huge list of processes running atm. There should be no process that takes more than 2% of your CPU time, only exceptions are the Game itself and the System Idle Process, if there are several Processes that together take more than 10% CPU time you might want to uninstall those (don't kill processes you don't know about, google them! You could fuck up and kill a vital process (don't worry you can't kill the very vital ones... usually, and the worst that would happen is the PC shutting down)

Generally you want less then 55 Processes running at any time.

  • Step three

Since we are at in the Task Manager already I want to talk about the Priority setting, If you ever tried to increase your FPS you have read about it, basically what you do is tell your CPU to give more time to a certain process, however this can be counterproductive and actually DECREASE your FPS , you CAN try to set the priority to Above Normal or High (expect Sound tearing, crashes and general instability!) if this does help you good! Be careful tho and NEVER set it to Realtime, this will make your system incredibly unstable and you might loose / corrupt data.

  • Step four

If you are on Win 7 / Win 8 you should disable Windows Aero, to do so press Winkey + Pause a window will open , press Advanced system settings in the upper left corner. Another window will open switch to the Advanced tab, click Settings in the Performance section. Yet another Window will open, in the tab Visual Effects you should tick the "Adjust for best performance" option, If you did so your PC will take some time to adjust, Win7/8 will look like shit, however you WILL certainly get some FPS(this can range from only 1 to 20) out of this.

  • Step five

This one is kind of obvious, uninstall all Programs on your PC you don't need. This won't increase your FPS but will make the rest of your machine feel smoother , and depending on how "vicious" the software was you will see some better loading times.

  • Step six

This applies if you experience sudden FPS spikes, they are usually caused by your hardware overheating (and thus underclocking itself) an easy fix is to clean the insides of your Laptop / PC , be careful to not break something, especially if you have a Laptop you might want to give it someone who knows how to do it. Compressed air works wonders here!

Sometimes some specific particles are responsible for FPS drops, there was a way to disable specific particles, but it was kind of complicated, you might want to Google that, an easy fix is to lower your Particle option ingame.

*Step seven

This shouldn't really be a step as everyone should do this, update all your Programs, Adobe Air, Windows, your Graphics Driver EVERYTHING!

  • Step eight

Now I guarantee you this one will help, unless you already play on lowest settings imaginable. First go ingame and set the Framerate cap to "Benchmark" now DISABLE shadows and uncheck "HUD Animations" and disable Vertical Sync. Both Shadows and HUD Animations don't add much to the quality of the game yet they take quite a lot of performance, in turn you might be able to up some other options , like Particles(Effects Quality) or Character Quality.

  • Step nine

If you have Intel graphics , skip this step! If you have nVidia / AMD keep reading, go into your Graphics driver (right click on Desktop or look in your system tray) and go into the 3D Settings, now disable / set everything to low that might affect your game, especially things like Anti-Aliasing should be disabled (Set it to override application settings , then set the AA factor to 0 / none like this . if it is not clear if changing an option will yield FPS / lower them just experiment with it (usually you can do so while the game is running)

  • Step ten

This one should've been in step eight however I find it to be very radical so I put it in its own step, go ingame and lower your Resolution , the game will look worse the lower you go however you will see a huge performance gain , if you don't then your CPU can't handle LoL all too good and you reached the limit of FPS you can gain in LoL.

  • Step eleven

Right click the LoL Icon and click Properties and add "-nosound" to the end of the datapath. If this helped you your Soundcard might be Damaged / you need to update your Drivers, alternatively you can just disable the Audio ingame by checking the box in the audio option, however the -nosound way may be more effective.

  • Step twelve and final step

Right click the LoL Icon and click Open file location (For XP useres the path is C:/RiotGames/League of Legends. This will take you into the LoL folder, now go into the Config folder and open Game.cfg with the basic windows Editor make a safety copy of the file and save it somewhere else in case you fuck up!Look for "EnableParticleOptimization" set its value to 1. You can play around with other options, however keep the original safe file at hand in Case LoL won't start with the new options. Also make the file read-only when you are done by right clicking it , pressing Properties and then checking Read-Only at the bottom.

High end Machines

First of all some of the Tips up above might help you , try them !

*Step one

If it never worked like it should in the first place, try to update Drivers !

*Step two

Right click the LoL Icon and click Properties and add "-nosound" to the end of the datapath. If this helped you your Soundcard might be Damaged / you need to update your Drivers, alternatively you can just disable the Audio ingame by checking the box in the audio option, however the -nosound way may be more effective.

  • Step three

Are you sure your PC actually IS high end? Many pre build PCs have crazy over the Top CPUs like the FX 8350 or some i7 but put in GFX Cards that aren't meant to run games , like the nVidia GT 640, which is for watching BluRay videos at high resolutions. You can post your specs and I or someone else might look over it!

  • Step four

Your PowerSupply might be too weak and is not delivering enough energy to your GPU (if it would give less to your CPU it would turn off) to test for this run Prime95 and some Graphics benchmark like FurMark together , if your PC turns off your PowerSupply is too weak, or some of your overclock is unstable (only if you actually overclocked) if your Hardware comes factory overclocked it almost never is unstable as they test those cards.

No more steps! Anything that is more specific than what I mentioned here would be.. well too specific, you can PM me with your problems and I'll help you, but this post would be at least 10x longer if I included everything that could be wrong !

Now again for you Low end Machine users, the best way to fix your low FPS is to buy another PC , I which will be able to play on High , with a very good chance of Ultra @ 1080p

Note that you would need an Operating System, and I did not include an Optical drive as you can install windows via USB Flash Drive.

EDIT: Please note that having over 60FPS is worthless if your Monitor is 60Hz! and EXTRA TIP! Open your Run Window / Search window in Win7 / Vista and type in "msconfig" go into the autostart menu and disable anything you don't want to have at start up, this will make Windows start faster :).
